James Larsen, CEO & Chairman
James LarsenJames Larsen founded IWICS in 2001 utilizing his 25 years of experience in leading teams in the research, development and implementation of intelligent adaptive wireless packet switched relay systems. These multi-hop full mesh networks were applied to a wide range of wireless networks ranging from satellite systems to vehicle telematics throughout the world. Systems researched, designed and developed by James have been successfully manufactured and deployed in a number of
multimillion dollar packet switched projects worldwide. James played a key role in
the specification, negotiation and deployment of these projects.

James has played the lead role in the development of the IWICS international patent portfolio and is actively involved with the filing of new and innovative patents throughout the world. Before establishing IWICS, James served as President & Chairman of Salbu Research and Development where he lead a team in the primary research and development of a cellular relay system concept to enhance the performance and capacity of future cellular/wireless systems and developed demonstrable hardware and software to implement the concept.

James worked extensively within the worldwide standards bodies to help define the international 3G standards. He has also done extensive work modeling current and future network traffic models, mobility models, propagation models, and evaluation of the models against performance requirements.

James earned a BSEE (Communications, RF and microwave systems, analog integrated circut design) at the University of Natal, South Africa from 1980 to 1984. He has completed substantial experimental and theoretical work toward a PhD in advanced adaptive "Burst mode" packet switch systems and antenna design. James has a total of 12 inventions in the field of adaptive packet switched systems, with 142 patents being granted or accepted, covering nearly 50 countries.


David Mendes, President & Chief Operations Officer

David MendesDavid joined IWICS in June 2004 with over 20 years of experience in the Tel/Com
and software industries. Prior to joining, IWICS, David was President/CEO of TeleSynthesis, Inc, a Colorado telecommunications software company that was ranked #25 on the 2002 Inc 500 list of Fastest Growing companies. While leading TeleSynthesis, David developed and executed a business plan that successfully produced over $12 million in annual revenue, negotiated multi-million dollar
contracts with Fortune 500 firms such as IBM, Qwest, and Lucent, and organized the company to achieve ISO 9000 compliance.

Prior to his stint at TeleSynthesis, David was responsible for managing budget and personnel for several multi-million dollar projects for companies such as Evolving Systems, Loral Corporation and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, including leading the development team that built the initial United States National Number Portability Administration Center clearinghouse software system for Neustar, Inc.

David has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in AB Management and a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.


Michael Pettit, Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel

Michael PettitMichael joined IWICS in March 2005, prior to which he had practiced as a partner at Spoor & Fisher Attorneys, in South Africa, where he headed the firm’s commercial department. As a patent attorney specializing in the commercialization of technology and in related intellectual property transactional matters, Michael has enjoyed an ongoing affiliation with Salbu Research and Development and IWICS since 2000.

While at Spoor & Fisher, Michael also co-managed an independent consulting
company that concentrated on the valuation of intellectual property assets and in the development of patent portfolio prosecution and commercialization strategies. His clients included several preeminent listed companies in South Africa, some of which were also listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Michael earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Cape Town and a Master of Laws degree from New York University. Michael is admitted as an attorney in New York and in South Africa, and he is registered as a patent attorney in both the United States and South Africa.
